Evererest three passes trek Difficulty level

The Everest three pass trek is one of Nepal's most difficult treks. It is one of Nepal's top, if not the best, trekking routes. In terms of difficulty, I would rate it an 8 out of 10. During such treks, one of the few things to be concerned about is the harsh cold.

Your body would be unable to cope with the altitude without appropriate acclimatization. The weather in the Everest region is also unstable. You should also be careful if you want to visit during the off-season. Another factor to consider when trekking is mental fitness.

July 2021 • Verified Traveler

We had the pleasure of having Bikram guiding us through the three high passes trek in April 2019. We were three people and the experience was beyond excellent. Bikram is a great guide with hundreds of hikes and climbs on his back. He’s got a deep knowledge of the mountains which is essential when you are going up to the five thousands. He is up there not only during the typical hiking seasons (March-May and September-October), but also during the harsh winter, when the snow covers everything. Bikram has a very experienced eye and will adjust the hike to your physical condition which will make your Himalayan experience much enjoyable. The evening chats were also great, nothing like a having a warm tea while he talks about mountains, Nepalese people, life in the area…

Bikram was my guide on the Three Passes and Everest Base Camp trek. He knows half of people whom you encounter on the trek, which amongst his knowledge about the surrounding peaks, nature and fauna, proofes his experience. Birkam is very reliable and we had a great time. Highly recommend him for said trek.

I hiked the Manaslu Circuit with Bikram in 2018 and loved it so much that I came back in 2019 to hike Three Passes with Bikram again! Trekking in Nepal is an amazing experience - the landscapes are unparalleled in the world and staying in little tea houses along the way is a great way to get a glimpse into life in Nepal.

I highly recommend traveling with Bikram and his new team at The Himalayan Odyssey. They are helpful in coordinating your trip from the very beginning - helping to prepare long in advance, advise on logistics and equipment, help booking hotels, transportation, porters and any other support you could need. When you're on the trail with Bikram you can feel secure that he will be there for you in any situation you need. He can tell you about the history and culture of the area you're traveling through, explain the landscape, provide safety advice and even tell you which teahouses serve the best food and tea.

All the trekking experiences I had in Manaslu and Khumbu were very safe. There were times that were challenging - like getting altitude sickness below EBC and pushing for the final pass on Renjo after 16 days of hiking. But in those cases, Bikram was always by my side to help out, give the encouragement or support I needed and be a steady presence if anything went wrong (which never happened!). Knowing you have someone that is level-headed and is prepared to guide you safely is very important, and you can definitely count on Bikram for this.

Can't wait to go to Dolpo next time!

The highest point of the trek is Kala Patthar at 5,545 meters (18,132 feet) above sea level.

The best seasons are February to May and September to October, when the weather is dry and stable. Winter and monsoon seasons are not ideal due to snow and heavy rainfall.

The average daily altitude gain is around 400 to 450 meters.

The trek usually takes about 18 to 20 days, depending on the itinerary and acclimatization schedule.

Meals are served in teahouses along the route. You can expect dishes such as rice, chapati, tsampa porridge, Tibetan bread, soups, Sherpa stew, dumplings, noodles, and thukpa, especially in places like Namche Bazaar.

You do not need to be an athlete, but you should be in good health. Daily walking can take 6 to 7 hours including breaks.

If you have allergies or special medical needs, you should bring your own medicine. The trekking company provides a basic medical kit and safety support for altitude and common illnesses.

Previous trekking experience is helpful but not mandatory. With good physical and mental fitness, even beginners can complete the Everest Three High Passes Trek.
