Gokyo and Renjo La Pass Route

Gokyo Renjo La Pass Trek Route starts with a thrilling flight to the tiny mountain airstrip at Lukla. It is the primary gateway to the Everest Region Trek. After landing in Lukla, our trek starts along the banks of the Dudh Koshi River to reach Phakding.

The next day, we will walk to the edge of Namcheand contour on a hill with a straight trail to Sanasa. Here the trail splits NE to Everest and NW to Gokyo. We may have the chance to take a short break up to Khumjung, a lovely Sherpa village above Namche.

On the way, enjoy the rare wildlife inside a national park. It includes musk deer, wild mountain goats, snow leopard, mountain hawk, and others. Further, we will trek through Dole, Machhermo, which leads us to Gokyo valley.

Gokyo Valley is famous for its thrilling alpine lakes and incredible mountain views. Pre sunrise hike above Gokyo Ri assures an unparallel panoramic view of towering peaks.

As you return back then, experience the enormous Ngozumpa Glacier at the foot of Cho Oyu. Be ready for the challenging part of the trek called Renjo La Pass. Here, you can feast your eyes on another surreal view of the Himalayas.

Finally, you will climb Renjo La Pass and descend down to Lungden. Ahead descending to Thame, Namche, and finally to Luklaon consecutive days. Your adventurous trek ends with a flight back to Kathmandu.

Difficulty during Gokyo Renjo La Pass Trek

Renjo La Pass is located at a high elevation. The ascent is not the sharpest and thus it is a moderate trek. This hike is suitable for anyone in good health and stamina. Despite some steep hills and slippery trails, the overall journey is very moderate and achievable.

The track is also well marked, but snow-covered trails, especially in winter, can make navigation problematic. Another difficulty is high altitude, as the journey reaches a peak elevation of 5000 meters, which might cause altitude sickness or other medical complications.

Itinerary

The Lukla flights will be delay if there is bad weather, with an average delay being 24 hours. We can be flexible and change the itinerary to catch up on lost days, but if the planes can’t fly for more than 4 or 6 days, then there is nothing to do besides waiting.

  • On a clear day, you can enjoy the distant view of Everest

  • At Jorsale, you will enter Sagarmatha National Park, where our permits checked

  • You will stay one more night at Namche to acclimatize our well at a high altitude.

  • You will hike to Syangboche Airport (3,700m), which is believed to the highest airport in the world.

  • You will then continue towards Everest View Hotel for astonishing views of Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Tawache, etc.

  • On the way back, you will explore the Sherpa culture museum and Everest Photo Gallery.

  • Overnight at Namche Bazaar

  • 6 to 7 hours of trek from Namche Bazar to Dole

  • Today the trek rises above 4,000m

  • Climb to the top of the ridge will serve the magnificent view of Everest and Lhotse

  • Walk on the mainstream trail for some time until Sanasa (3,600m)

  • Bend NW along the slopes of Khumbila (5,761m) into the Dudh Koshi Valley and climb up towards Mong La (3,975m)

  • Drop down to PhortseThenga (3,680m) through pine and rhododendron forest before rising towards Dole

  • Overnight at Dhole

  • The trail climbs steeply out of the valley through dense rhododendron forests

  • Today you will climb from the basin to a ridge. 
  • South face of the tantalizing Cho Oyu and Ghyachung Kang Glacier comes into view
  • Then the trail descends gently towards the river, and at Pangka (4,390m), we ascend to the side of the moraine
  • There are six arrays of glacial-fed lakes on the western side of the moraine
  • A bridge takes us to the edge of first, the Longponga Tsho (4,690m)
  • A final 30-minute leisure walk takes us to the edge of DudhPokhari.

  • Today you climb uphill gradually through a lush grassy slope

  • The slope slowly becomes steeper, and we continue to the top

  • Also small Rermo Pokhari Lake to the west can be seen

  • Next, you trek downhill through the lush meadow towards BhoteKoshi Valley and then continue beside the river

  • On the way to Lungden, you may encounter Yak Caravans treading from Tibet towards Lungden.

  • You will then leave to Thame village. 

  • Continue your trek down to the Sherpa’s heartland Namche Bazaar

  • From Jorsale, you exit Sagarmatha National Park and continue through its buffer zone

Gokyo Renjo La Pass Weather

The peak seasons for visiting Nepal are during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). You will feel bless with the best scenery and clearest skies. But of course, they are a little more crowded than in the off-season.

During spring, you will see colourful blooming flowers everywhere during the trek. Autumn months are popular for crystal clear and majestic mountains.

Some people also trek during winter (December to February). But you will face cold temperatures and difficulty in walking.

You can also trek during the monsoon season (June to August). The views will be cover by clouds, and there is a high chance of rainfall, leading to slippery trails.
